Rough Trade are fighting back against internet music downloads by opening what has been called the biggest music-only shop in England. The company thinks that eople still want to have the physical option of buying a CD or vinyl, rather than MP3 or ordering online. What do you think, do you still like buying CDs from shops? Or has the internet made high-street shops redundant?

I like CDs for albums, so I've got something tangible, a booklet etc, but mp3s for singles - CD singles are an abominable waste of resources (10 minutes of music if you're lucky on a disc that can hold 80), and not what the medium was meant for.

Actually, I still have a bit of a thing for 7" vinyl singles, but there aren't many of them about these days.
Good Idea......If they can get the cost of a Single down to
99p Also they may win on Quality, I use Itunes AAC file
But I need more Record Companies to stop over recording
the levels & release more quality on new downloads
for the I Tunes... '+' Quality......Mike
I always buy CD's
I prefer quality to quantity. If Idown loaded,I don't think I could honestly class it as "having got the record" just todays version of taping.
As a DJ and I have a brother in law in the music business, This is a topic we speak about on a weekly basis. When CD's first came on the market, typically eniglish, we were ripped off. The record industry excuse was that they spends thousands looking at unsigned band and thats why they used to charge between 10 & 15 ten years ago. At the same time the quality of music has declined. Most mobile discos will only buy cd's from a shop for acts likeThe Beatles, Rod, Bowie and all the pre 1998 classic groups. I can download a number one single this week and never ever be asked for it again after about 3 months.
My answer, buy the classics, download anything else
It may be an age thing.

I am 52, and i still like tangible source material, and i enjoy the experience of buying CD's/ As music journalist, I get a fair number of freebies, but i only really truly appreciate albums i have bought myself.

I have downloaded almost all my 7" collection - purely for practical and storage reasons - I wouldn't buy a download single, or download an album - i like a disc, cover art, the works - but that may be because i grew up with vinyl.

i can see that generations to come will find CD's as quaint as shellac 78's - the world moves on, and amen to that.
While i am new to downloading and the thought of all this music at the push of a button (and 1/2 hr wait for download - I'm on dial-up you know!) there is nothing like going out on a Saturday morning trawlling the racks of cd's and vinyls. Probably romantically, it just feels you are part OF the music by making the effort and owning a copy rather than feeling a bystander. No point complaining bout oldens buying James Blunt in Asda as downloading is just as remote.

I can look at my collection and tell you where, when, what and who I was doing for every record I own. They are pieces of history. Do you know what I mean ??
I used to buy a lot of CD's, at one point I had 3,000+. But since I have been able to download from places like Napster (the current legal version) I have purchased no CD's. In my 20's I'd buy about 10 CD's a week, I doubt I have purchased that many in the last 3 years.

The physical item means very little to me, I used to like vinyl because of the organic nature of it but one CD is the same as any other.
i still buy cds now and again, have a few back-up copies.. people are just selfish, cant be f***ed to buy music and PAY artists like they deserve!
