We have been tending a strip of land outside our house. It does not belong to the council, and we have never been able to find out who owns it. Is there a way of gaining possession of the lad (quiet possession?) by tending it for a certain number of years? When we have tended it for that certain number of years, how to we make a legal claim on it?

Have you securely fenced it off so that no-one - including the original owner - other than yourselves can enter? If yes, for how long? If no, then there is no chance. Phone your local Land Registry Office and ask Customer Services for a (free) guide to Adverse Possession.
