i've been working at screwfix for just over 6 weeks now,and part of the condition for them to take me on full time,permanent,i have to produce a police check,now i have previous,i.e.theft,criminal damage etc but these date back to between 1989-1993,which are over 10 years ago,can the company legally sack me for crimes i did when i was a kid,iam 35 now and iam nothing like that,so is there a law to say a company cannot sack anyone for crimes commited over 10 years ago,someone at work has said there is,is there anywhere i can go for help because i feel this wrong to judge people by what they did a long time ago because everyone does wrong but grow up

i've been doing a bit of research and apparently my convictions are spent and i don't have to tell them,i've never been to prison or anything,all i've ever had was a supervision order and conditional discharge and these are spent once you finish the length of the order

one last thing,it is part of my work contract that i give a satisfactory police record so can they still sack me or can i still tell them nothing,i was going to go to the citizens advice this week

I tell you what , perhaps they may have you on dishonestly filling in the application question if there was one for have you any previous convictions??
I personally would confess to a senior manager , ask them if they are happy with what you do ?? then if they are tell them something has been bothering you ..., Problem is these things in the past have a terrible habit of cropping up through a mate of a mate etc ..better to be honest , a good manager will favour this openess.
I too believe that people should not be judged on what they did when they were younger , we change , get responsabilities and get mature , and even value our freedom , there are others that don't change as well , You are not one of those . best of luck ,

if you have to produce a CRB check for them all your previous convictions will show up,whether they are spent or not.
