Children's Act 1989

I would be grateful for a pointer in the right direction. I have applied for a job (not a legal job) where the job description says a knowledge of the Children's Act 1989 is required. I have found some info on the internet but a question remains: why was the Act introduced - what "mischief" was it intended to remedy? I would be very grateful for any info on this.

i am not familiar totally with the uk system but a similar one in ireland.Basically the uk act altered the law in relation to children particularly with regards the welfre of children and the states duty to protect and promote their welfare. It gives the state powers to intervrne into the lives of children and remove them into care. It also addresses the whole area of parental responsibility whereby each parent of a child retain their rights to be fully involved and aware of all aspects of the childs life and upbringing.It addresses measures to safeguard children. Depending om what job you have applied for will determine how much of the act you need to be aware of particularly if it relates to working with children
