How long in advance should I apply for a Visa for India?

I'm hoping to do volunteer teaching work for 3-6 months starting in November.

By post it can take upto 4 weeks......will get back to you in 2 weeks in off peak periods. Or else you can get it on the same day if you go to the High Commission in London. Maybe there are other high commissions in other parts of the Uk so please check on the web

I got my business visa from the Consulate General office in Birmingham. There is also an office in Edinburgh.

This is a same day service. You go in the morning (during a fixed time period), join a queue, hand in your application and payment. You go back in the afternoon (during a fixed time period), join a queue and pick up your passport with visa.

There are also visa surgeries held on single dates around the country. The schedule for 2005 is already published and available on the High Commission for India web site (see below).

All the information you need regarding visas (including the 2005 surgery schedule) is at

NB - I applied for 1 year, but only got 6 months visa because it was my first working trip there.
