If you want to do things properly, you need to write them a letter, giving them, say, 28 days to pick up or you'll dispose of them. You need to send it registered post

Presumably the person who brought the bikes in for repair still owes you money for those repairs. Under such circumstances the minimum notice you must give him of your intention to sell is THREE MONTHS. (You must also state the amount that is due within your notice of intention to sell). See Section 6 in Part II of Schedule 1 of the Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977:

Just a thought. How would a 'customer' prove that the items were left in the first place?

You ought to have a notice up saying that goods will be sold after so many weeks if not collected?
Our shoe repairers is now offering 10% discount for people who pay for their shoe repairs up front, which is more incentive to go back and get them. He keeps repairs 3 months - big sign in the shop - then gives the repaired shoes to a charity shop if not collected. All very clear and up front.

Most repair facilities (whether they be for shoes, electronic goods, bicycles or anything else) give the property owner a dated receipt when goods are left with them. The only exception seems to be when people leave thousands of pounds worth of goods (i.e. their cars) at their local garage!
