In a recent court case, the judge threw out the case for various reasons. It involved GBH, the Family Court, custody of children etc, but he closed by advising the mother that children need a father and should not be denied access. On this basis, what is the situation where gay men are adopting children? Do they need a mother? Or gay women adopting children? Do they need a father also?

Perhaps what his honour meant was a father figure - a stable presence supporting the mother figure, one who doesn't flit in and out of a child's life.

Lots of children of my generation grew up without a father owing to the depredations of Hitler and Mussolini. Some even grew up without either.

"Need" maybe too strong a word, as, when circumstances become non-ideal due to things outside of folks' control, then these affected do cope. Whether they cope as well, and achieve no long term loss from the situation, being another matter.

Children need loving parents regardless of gender.

I think this judge was referring to women (or men) that deny their ex access to the children out of spite.
