2d 'whummle'- it's in Chambers and fits the definition but I can't parse it to save my life. 3d- think of an alternative name for Britain, subtract "on" and you have a town in SW France. 24d "epee" i.e. a sword 21a I think is 'sebat', a Hebrew month. Parsing it is difficult- my guess is an anagram of a + best.

'Sebat' is a reversal ('in a twist') of 'tabes', which means the wasting of an organ or body part.
