Not something I have done before but last night I made a  very small donation to a Go Fund Me appeal.

I genuinely am so sad that it's needed. A heart breaking situation.

However I was appalled to see during the online process to make the donation it upped my amount by almost another £1... no no no, I do not intend leaving a tip to GFM to improve the service..that's what was suggested!!

I worked my way round the site til I found how to delete the 'tip'..only then did I authorize my donation to pay.

What's the general opinion on charging the extra..I'm sure many don't notice or care, buy I did.

The platform is probably expensive to run and I believe the charges per donation are quite small.

There's no such thing as a free lunch 😁

Does Go Fund Me pass on the whole of your donation, or do they deduct a percentage or charge a fee?

Obviously GFM have overheads / admin costs, but if they already have a formula to cover those I think asking for a tip is OTT.

The deduction is 2.9% + 25p per donation.

There was a site which took some of the donated money to cover costs, can't remember which one.

If a site says all donated money is sent but we'll charge £1, upfront and not hidden, then that seems fair.

I pay the extra on a charitable site that I donate to cover the cost of processing my payment.

I won't donate to any GFM appeal, GFM doesn't regulate it effectively and the money raised can be spent on anything, although it is possible to get a refund.

There are too many GFM scams for my liking.  GFM claim to effectively prevent fraud but it really doesn't.

it's easy enough to cancel the donation if you don't want to make it

Should have had travel insurance of course but the accident was unusual & the consequences severe.

they are providing a service and charge for it

Give to the Charity direct and use Gift Aid

It has been perennial problem at least since Oxfam ( does that make is non=perennial?) as to how much the admin charges or should charge. The directors of Cancer Researcch walk amongst the Great and Good. whilst we liddle people put our pennies in the tins

..... stuff the pennies in with our hot little hands....
