Some will be on here soon to say that MPs are entitled to it and need it while pensioners would only waste it.  Even the ones that cancelled it for pensioners claim it even though between them and their husbands they get the best part of a million a year in salary.

I can understand the extra expense for individuals related only to their job is a valid case for being on expenses; but as mentioned above, it ain't a good look when tightening up on the help for those on pension; and they are being paid sufficiently well that heating any necessary second home could be seen as already covered in their salary.

 

One wonders whether they will return any profit from a needed second home, back to the taxpayer when they sell up again.

I don't see why they need second homes.  Live in their constituency and stay in a hotel or dormitory when necessary

Typically the HoC sits for about 200 days a year. If MPs outside commuting distance are expected to be in London on those days it's a bit much to say they should spend that time in a hotel - I sure wouldn't want to.

I do think some of them are milking the system but it would be difficult to draw up rules that suit all individual cases.

What about building a block of flats and providing a small flat, free of charge, for any MP from a constituency too remote to commute from, when the House is sitting.

Nicebloke, they could be used full time. Any staff could use any bedsit when available; rented out short term during recess

I don't think it is now and then.  If it was, MPs could spend the odd night in a hotel.  Nothing wrong with renovating empty office space for them to use.

Not really, a hotel does your washing, cleaning etc where a flat you would have to look after yourself, as the rest of us do.

In anycase a building of that nature even if available would cost sn arm and a leg in London, not to mention council tax service charged etc. Cheaper, much cheaper as it is. Plus MPs are not going to invest their own earnings in such prodject are they?

Need not be in London, just within easy commuting distance for those whose constituency is outside the London area. And the places could be assigned for the duration of the term so no bed-hopping per night.

I doubt there is any such thing as easy commute into London OG, a d even if there was the purchase price of land and property is mad. Then you also have to consider the security of such a property.

MPs of all kinds living in one place? It could well become a target of the insane.
