No it doesn't. The magistrate or judge in the crown court will request a pre sentence report to be completed by probation. They will request a PSR for any sentence other than a fine or a discharge (which is EXTREMELY unlikely in ABH, but entirely possible). A PSR will look at the offence, the offender, previous convictions, the likelihood of reoffending and the most suitable way of dealing with the offender which can range from community punishment (curfew, unpaid work, supervision order etc) to suspended sentences to imprisonment. It is for the sentencing court to decide on sentence after reading the report and listening to mitigation on the offender's behalf.
