Hi, we were witnesses to an incident that has been to court, all three pleaded guilty and the people are lined up to be sentenced soon for;

Conspiracy to adapt wording from precedent for substantive offence

Can anyone tell me what this means exactly and what the likely sentence may be?

I am not sure where your information about charge has come from. They are obviously charged with conspiracy but the words "adapt wording etc" are an instruction to whoever has drafted the charge to state what they have conspired to do.

The sentence will depend in a large part on the nature of the conspiracy

Conspiracy to adapt wording from precedent for substantive offence is a serious offence related to premeditated theft/fraud.

As far as sentencing is concerned, (in the UK) if there are further charges brought against the perpetrators then this is likely to increase the term of sentence. Average sentence for this type of offence is upto 5 years in custody.

If the person comitting this offence had an unblemished character, and this was the only charge brought, then it could still be a considerable 3 years in custody.
