It would either have to be serious enough to require a transfusion or, alternatively, require extensive medical treatment (e.g. an operation to repair severed tendons). For the 'with intent' to be added to the charge, it requires that, for example, a weapon was selected for the assault. To get some idea of the seriousness of the charge against your partner, read Sections 5 & 6 here:

Section 18 GBH carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. If your partner used a glass to inflict the injury, the sentencing guidelines suggest a sentence of 3 years imprisonment. If he used a knife, the guidelines recommend a sentence in the range 3 to 8 years:

There's a certain economy with the truth here. Still no explanation as to how the hand was cut. This is imperative to the advice given.
If four lads were to jump one lad - the police/cps would hardly have a chance of a conviction before a jury for assault by the one being attacked on one of the four attackers.
Something is missing here in the puzzle and without all the pieces a full picture cannot be given without the truth and all the facts.

yeh what a great bloke - has a knife on him and he's prepared to use it !!
With that in mind re-read this section of Chris's post :

I think he's lucky not to be looking at a murder charge - it could have ended so differently.

i am not saying what he did was right far from it and am not condoning it yes he was in the wrong and should do a custodial sentence but the other lads did start it and he was acting in self defence the wrong way i agree but the place where we live is a bad place and people are always causing trouble but like i said i dont condone any of it and its his own doing he was protecting himself
