Handling stolen goods
I have been charged with handling stolen goods. I gave a mate the keys to my empty garage and told him he could use it to store some computers. He took them from where he works. He was arrested and told the police they were there. The police made me open the garage. There were 10 computers in there. I was arrested. I have admitted that I knew they were nicked so I guess I should plead guilty. What kind of sentence am I likely to get?

Seriously though, this is from WikiCrimeLine :
"A person guilty of handling stolen goods shall on conviction on indictment be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years".

ignorance in law is not an excuse....... dependant on how much the computers are worth....... i mean you could be charged of handling 10 stolen toilet rolls, but in value they dont add up to much......... hopefully you would get no more than a community service , it really depends on how much the goods are worth...... ignorance in law is not an excuse to evade conviction , but it will be taken into consideration that you was too trusting to this mate.... consequently you are subject to prosecution .......... hope it goes ok for u neil b .,

Your sentence will depend upon the extent of your criminality ie did you simply turn a blind eye to what was going on or did you know he was stealing these items and needed somewhere to hide them.
The court will also take into account your previous record if any.
Finally you will be given credit by the court for entering an early guilty plea = even though the evidence against you is overwhelming the courts give a lesser sentence for pleading guilty. I'm sure the Magistrates will bend over backwards to make sure you aren't punished too harsly. Oops I forgot the courts dont punish any more its all about rehabilitation and reparation so 198x is probably right
