My brother in law was in court last week for sentencing for assaulting my sister and their son. We didn't know the actual date of sentancing so we didn't go. My sister has received a letter saying that she is entitled to a pitance of componsation but that is not the point. We want to find out what he was sentanced to large fine, tagging etc. My brother rang the court today and they said they do not have that information. The police officer from the domestic violence unit that has been looking after my sister through this is off on holiday and apparently no one else can speak to my sister.

He got a 6 month suspended sentence.
Your sister should contact the police officer when s/he returns from holiday, unless she is in fear.

If she is worried about a violent confrontation she should telephone the duty sergeant and explain her worries. She may be able to find out more that way.

Wineoh.

OF COURSE the Court is allowed to give you that information. The case has been held in a Public Court and thus the Public are allowed to know.

Was it in the Mags or the Crown hun.

Let me know and I will direct you from thereon.

If you go into a court , rather than phone, they will have the court results as a matter of public record, or look through the local paper that covers your area, the week after sentencing day.
Even if the police officer dealing is off, speak to the Criminal Justice Unit/ Admin Support Unit (called different things in different areas) and they should be able to find out for you.

Thanks for your replies. The case was held in the Magistrates court. My brother in law has been seen out and about so we know he didn't get sent down. (Even though he has been convicted of assault twice before - not against my sister though)I will go in person to the court tomorrow and ask again as my sister does not want to wait another two weeks until her case officer comes back from holiday.
Thanks again
