assault on PC
Hi,
I was arrested yesterday and charged with assaulting a PC.
I was on Southsea Common and had been drinking and was following the Portsmouth team bus, an officer told me to get back from the bus. I did so but in the crowd was jostled against another officer resulting in them piling on me (cutting my eye) and arresting me.
In the interview they alleged that I pushed a police officer and charged me with assault.
My questions are do I have to plead guilty to avoid an expensive legal action, and if I plead guilty what sort of penalties will I be looking at? (have never been in trouble with the law previously).
thanks

You do not have to have legal representation yourself, though it would be advisable as this is an imprisonable offence.
In addition, pleading guilty entitles you to a reduced sentence.
Magistrates sentencing guidelines for Assault on a PC (for a first time offender pleading not guilty) show a starting point of custody.

Since the start of history british men have drunk then fought.
I am sorry but If a copper gets in the way of drunken fun then 9 out 10 times his going get a right hander.
That is called an occupational hazard.
The difference is that with a face full of CS, an ASP being whacked around your legs, a set of speed cuffs cutting into your wrists, and a good kicking on the way to the van, then the better solution was proberly not fight the poilce in the first place.
Let this be lesson to those who drink and fight with the coppers, you will lose...I have the scars to prove it.
You may not like the Police but who you gonna call if your kid get's raped, or your car gets smashed by a yob, or someone robs your house.
