Gangs of youths attacking our property
Hi all
Late yesterday afternoon, a group of between 15 and 20 young lads attacked our 3 properties at the end of our cul de sac, including ours. They climbed over our fences which back onto a playing field, threatened myself, my husband and all of our neighbours with verbal threats to kill. They were throwing stones at cars, people and young children. I ended up being taken to hospital in an ambulance (28 weeks pregnant) as all the stress and panic had causing severe pain and tightening in my tummy (all is ok with baby, thank goodness). Despite 8 phone calls to the police whilst this sustained (25 minutes) verbal attacking/climbing over our fences to get to us and throwing stones, no police attended until 45 mintues after the gang left. All of our neighbours were terrified, and with 5 seperate incidents of criminal damage and an ambulance attending, the whole thing was horrific. The 50+ year old policeman who attended on his own said "so what do you want me to do, I can't go after them on my own", which ofcourse he couldn't, but as we got photos and names after they were recognised by a neighbour, what can we expect to happen to this hideous creatures?

How appalling! Glad to heqar that you're ok though.
Talking about the G20 police complaints today, Nick Hardwick, chairman of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, said "It is about being servants, not masters: the police are there as public servants" You might remind your local police of that.
If I were you, I would write a letter signed by all the residents affected by this incident to complain to your local Police Chief Inspectror and insist on a meeting to discuss the lack of an effrective response.
Get the local press involved, particularly if you have photos.
I would also meet with your neighbours to discuss what to do if you get a recurrence of this incident. I don't mean vigilante tactics.
Have video recorders at hand to record as much of the action as you can from different angles.
Make sure that every household calls the police.
Photograph all damage.
Record as much information as you can remember about the incident as soon after it occurs as possible.
Good luck.

We've just had a policeman turn up (in a riot van) who took statements from all residents, looked at the photos we took, identified the lads from the pictures (well known to the local police by all accounts) and reckoned that he had enough to arrest at least one of them. I know it's been said time and time again, but I really don't know where this epdemic of s**t has come from. I'm sick to death of it.
Hi picky:
First of all, I sincerely hope you suffer no ill effects and that your little one will arrive intact as soon as s/he decides the time is right, not because of the result of your terrifying experience.
I'm not going to make any comment about the lack of Police response, I think your description of the incident speaks for itself.
My concern is that nothing of any significance will happen to any of the thugs who may be eventually prosecuted as a result. I say that simply because the law is so weak in these areas and also the fact that the likely punishment (if any) would probably be so derisory that it would serve as no deterrent against future similar incidents.
Sorry if that sounds depressing but it's unfortunately the way it is. The victim often ends up being let down by "the system".
Bring back the birch and that would go a long way to deterring these idiots instead of the proverbial slap on the wrist which I can guarantee you will be the outcome.

Hi Picky, hope all goes well with you and the baby.
at least you had some consolation when the police turned up and showed some interest. We had a similar case last year and the police turned up quickly but they switched on blue lights and sirens a good 500 yards away. This gave the gang plenty of time to disperse and by the time the police arrived there was nobody to be seen. They did a quick lap and without stopping drove off again.

what a dreadful and scary situation,Hope you especially are now O.K.
All that you can do has been mentioned previously , but get your local councillors involved --all of you.Keep pestering them and your community police officers.
Set up a meeting for the crime prevention officer to come andspeak to you all.
Keep a united front, letter to the Chief Constable , don't forget the local press as well.
Set up a neighbour hood watch scheme if you do not have one.The Police will advise how..

Thanks so much for all your answers, we've been sitting here tonight in terror, waiting for something to happen, but thankfully nothing (yet). It's such a sorry state of affairs when you are scared to be in your own home, but I know you can't let the scumbags win. At least everything is ok with baby and my son, husband, neighbours and myself got through it relatively unscathed. Thanks again
