ABH First Offence

I assaulted a man who threatened myself and my wife. He was agressive, swearing and raising his hands to us and I felt that we were going to be attacked. I punched him once and as he fell I kicked out at him. He was rendered unconcious and suffered a broken tooth. I am mortified this has happend and cant begin to understand why he was so agressive to us and also why I lashed out at him, for me this is completely out of character. I am 43 years old and the last time I had any kind of fight I was at school. I was arrested and am being charged with ABH, this is the first time I have been in trouble with the police in my life and I am absolutely confused as to what comes next and what kind of sentence I can expect. Any advice will be greatfully received. Thank you.
