Apprehension/Arrest of shoplifters.

What is the percentage of shoplifters caught in-store, or just outside the store having been observed thieving, and apprehended there & then - compared to those caught on cctv, tracked down via some method, then their details handed over to the Police?

I would have thought that the vast majority are only caught 'there & then' - do store detectives/security etc really have the time & manpower to go back and monitor cctv footage unless it is for a particularly expensive item?

(no, I have not been 'caught'!! This is following a general discussion on cctv efficacy and limits, after something happened to a friend recently....)

I just thought someone on here might be knowledgeable about cctv cameras, store security etc, and procedures regarding thieving. Say if a member of staff reported missing stock & knew which day the item(s) went missing - would they report it to the security people who would then go back on the day's activities to try and spot the thief? Would they really have time to do this? Would they bother for a relatively cheap item?
Or, would they, as I have advised (but don't know for sure) - only bother with those they see at the time of the offence?

I think they don't care or want to be bothered unless the incident comes up and needs investigating.

My point exactly - because all the time spend trying to catch someone who stole something previously - they would be missing all those who were doing it presently...?

Unless staff knew a fairly precise time and location of where said stolen item was taken, I can't see it would be worth the time & effort going back on tapes. After all, it's not exactly of MI5 or Scotland Yard importance is it? Or is it?!
