Dogs eating poo.

Has anyone found anything that stops dogs eating their own poo? (sorry if you've just had breakfast!) We try to get out and clear up the garden before any of the 3 dais get a chance to do so, but there are times when you can't get out there first. I've tried the pills you can get from pet shops, and they didn't seem to work - I've heard you can put pineapple in their food - has anyone found this works? and what sort of quantities? Thanks for any help.

I tried pineapple didn't really work. My vet recommended sprinkling chilli sauce on it as she had the problem her dog, she also said it is very common but most people wouldn't admit their dogs do it. Personally I pick up as soon as they do it then there is no problem.

I sometimes wish mine would eat it (kidding), but the amount I have to clean up each day I sure he doesn't touch it.

there's not a lot that will work - bitter apple, courgettes grated into food, chilli powder, all work to some extent but as soon as you stop either putting it in the food or sprinkling it on the poop then the cycle starts again. As suggested the only cure is rigorous clearing up each and every time -you have to do it anyway so best done as and when it happens.

You need to look at what they are eating and whether it is being properly digested. Poo that tastes nice usually contains a lot of what went in, so the dogs may not be getting all the goodness out of it. There is some stuff called Green Um I think that you can give them - I'll look it up.

Right, thank you everyone - I'll have to go and invest in a torch you can wear on your head for the late night/early morning poop run! Wouldn't chilli in their food upset their stomachs? - mind you, I do have two labradors with iron-cast stomachs, so maybe it wouldn't.

You put the chilli on the poo so they supposedly hate the taste and won't eat it. Not tried it myself so I don't know if it works

should have asked.... are they only eating their own? in which case Lankeela's advice is very relevant but the suggestions given to clear up as it happens is still correct (love the cap lamp btw) - however, if they eat any poop they find and almost seek it out, it may be the result of a condition called coprophogia - unlikely though.

Thinking about it, it is mostly their own poo they eat; the labradors don't go out and about much any more, and the youngest who is out with me most of the time is called off anything she is sniffing quickly. they are all fed on the same food (CSJ) but they have always done it, whatever food they have been on - it's undoubtably the eldest labrador who has led the other two into bad habits.

I have been trying CSJ for the past two weeks - they have just brought out a new one 'Complete Tripe' (its not a joke!). It seems to be putting weight on my young GSD and the littlies like it too, so have ordered a couple of bags.

My dog is terrible for raiding the cats' litter trays. They are kept upstairs and I try not to let him up, but if he manages to sneak by he reappears crunching.... :(

Pineapple added to the dog food is supposed to work in a lot of cases. I cant see the point in sprinkling it with chilli powder, you may as well pick it up. Mine are creatures of habit and will usually defacate within 30 minutes of their meals, so we remove it as soon as it is deposited. Not that they would eat it anyway. I think Greem Um is to avoid urine stains on grass?
