persoanlly i suppose i would give a gesture payment if the item was worth a money of say £10, just to say thanks, but not sure someone merely returning your property warrants a massive reward... does it?

i ask because the other day my friend lost his expensive phone (on contract) and his workmate went and collected it from the woman who found it, on the way to a job, and he told my mate that he had given the woman £50, because that was 10% of the value of the item...and wanted my friend to refund him....

now my mate was not happy about the £50...he hasnt much spare cash and thought 50 was way too much... ( he is also a little but unsure as to whether he believes him or not...but thats another matter)

now hes made up to have got the phone back...but still.... £50 is lot of money, hes just not sure how he feels about it
(he is a freelance so hasnt got a steady pay packet)

what do you think? where does this 10% thing come from?

I would not expect one, and would refuse one unless the item I was returning was a briefcase crammed full of £50's! Seriously, I think we have a moral responsibility to return what does not belong to us. All I would expect in return is a simple thank you. However, if I knew the person receiving the item (supposing it was valuable) was rich and wanted to offer me something, I would like to think I would politely refuse, but I could be persuaded. On the other hand, I would not be offended if it didn't happen, just pleased I'd done a good deed.

PS Joko, to add to the latter part of your question, I don't think your friend's workmate had any right to offer the lady a refund - there are no hard & fast rules about it, it's up to the individual. It's a bit of a cheek for this workmate to do this without being prompted, I wiould be suspect if he'd handed it over at all.

if the person had gone out of their way to return it, such as actually bringing it to me or taking it somewhere etc then i would suppose i would consider they deserved it.
