Query about Residential Boundary

We have a 5 feet high hedge at the end of our garden along a boundary for which we are responsible. We keep it nice and neat. The new owners on the other side have announced they are going to put up a 6 feet high lap-larch fence on their side of the hedge so that they don't have to maintain it on their side. I am concerned the building of the fence or the subsequent loss of light will kill the hedge.

Since it is our boundary, am I in a position to stop him doing this? I am assuming that since the new fence will be on his property that there is nothing I can do.

The Builder

Unless there are legal covenants, planning restrictions, or conditions attached to the land, Doctor, I'm afraid they're within their rights to put up the fence.

Builder is absolutely right I am afraid.

If it were me I would consider growing the hedge to just above the fence height, or higher (no restriction on height of hedges!). The hedge will then get more light and you won't have to see the fence. Hedges look so much nicer than fences!

Nope.
I doubt that will kill any hedge.
The loss of light just might make the inside lower parts spartan tho.

The hedge will be OK, just trim as usual.
