I have a friend born in South Africa in 1945 of a South African mother,British father.
She wa brought to England as a child by her father after her parents divorced.
She applied for a British passport and got it after being asked to prove her father was her father,that is a document with his name on,she only had a short birth certificate...she had to get the long version...no mean task as they are very slow to provide certificates etc.in SA.
Can she have duel nationality and can she obtain a South African passport,even though she does not have a SA ID,with having lived in the UK for most of her life.

I think the South African embassy would the best place to ask this.

If she can find her South African birth certificate or even her mothers she can claim. You can hold duel citizenship but you may not hold two passports. You have to choose. My husband was born outside sa and grew up outside. He claimed through his mother and got citizenship. It can take time but if her birth was registered there then there shouldn't be too much problem.

She has her own birth certificate,had to have it to see her father`s name when she applied for British passport claiming it through her father¬s nationality.
She also has her mother`s long birth certificate,plus her parents marriage one and the divorce papers.
Her mother`s passports too.(both parents now deceased).

There are ways and means to hold two passports.I know people who have done this.

Yes,it would take time...everything is done in slow motion,I know ,I am South African,also living in UK... but get back there quite a lot and it drives me mad at the slowness!!!!!
