Fencing question

I have recently  - after a long fought legal dispute erected a new fence along my bottom garden boundary, it's about 4 feet high and complemented with planting & trees. My pain in arse neighbour now wants to erect a 6 foot high fence on his side which will make mine look really stupid, with past history in mind I am reluctant to challenge him, does anyone know the legal position as its my boundary ?

So long as he keeps everything on his side, including any concrete footings to the posts and the fence is not more than 2 metres tall, he can do it I'm afraid. This is a very common situation, and the only thing to do is to plan where else you can beneficially use your 4 foot fence, and once he has completed his fence remove your fence and reinstall it there.

I agree. If it's completely on his property, there's nothing you can do about it.

If you remove your fence once he's done it, you can enjoy the extra few inches of land, although of course it will still technically be his land up to the existing boundary.

Why dont you top your fence with a two foot trellis onto which you can train plants. This would then hide your neighbours fence and stick two fingers up at him.

I'd go with landie's suggestion & if you do it quickly you may find that your neighbour changes his mind about adding another fence.  Good luck!

Forget the agro. Speak to the guy and try to find some compromise. If as you say, he is going to build a higher fence anyway.

Why dont you do what landie says, mention to the guy about adding trellis but get him to go halfers on the expence. That way everyone is happy.

Unless your fence is a mess I cant see him disagreeing to the compromise.

Hi all, many thanks for all your kind advice, I am going to take the option of beating him to it & adding thatch screening to the top of my fence behind my planting.

As an aside, if you had met this creature you would know why talking to him is out of the question :o).

Hi! Maybe you could attatch some trellis work onto your fencing and bring it up to match your neighbours higher fencing? Add a few climbing plants and it could look most attractive!
