The letter of US law says you were arrested (conviction is irrelevant - being arrested is enough) for a crime of moral turpitude and that you are therefore ineligible for the Visa Waiver Scheme -which DOES still exist. ESTA is preclearance for it, not a replacement.
If you answer YES to the relevant question on the ESTA form you will be refused and told to get a visa
There are those who say if you lie on the form you will get away with it - I refrain from comment on that
