... I see an increasing number of tractors/trailers/machinery on public roads - not just 'nipping across the lane' from one field to another, but travelling for miles on main country roads between farms.

Even if the tractor has proper licence plates (many don't), I can pretty much guarantee that the trailer/harvester/whatever will have no plates, no lights, nothing.

You can add to that the sheer arrogance and insensitivity of the drivers, who have absolutely no regard to road rules and/or the inconvenience they are causing to the huge tail-back of vehicles behind them.

Are they above the law in some strange way? Do any of them ever get prosecuted?

Coming back from a village pub recently, in a ridiculously narrow lane, I nearly ran into a square-bale blocking the road. No chance of moving it.

Just as I was considering a five mile detour, sixteen huge spotlights came out of the darkness. This is my "Close Encounters" moment, I thought. In a second, an invisible front-loader scooped the whole bale up and disappeared into the darkness................ ooo-er
I have to follow or overtake a tractor every single moprning on my way to work. At the time it really pees me off that they choose to travel at 0745 when everyone's trying to get to work but seriously they also have to do the same. What would go along way to alleviating the problem is if they were considerate enough occasionally to pull over and let the queue pass instead of cockingly sitting up there with loads of traffic behind them.
I meant cockily (is that a word?)
My nephew's one of them at the moment and as the Builder says he's working as a contractor.

And whilst he tries to pull over from time to time to let people by you wouldn't believe some of the idiotic attempts to over take him that he's had.

They've escaped prosecution too!

Two sides to every story!

The tractors that worry me when I'm driving at night on what passes for an A road here are the older ones that have a light above the cab and no side lights. I don't know if this is legal, but it' s sure scary.
To rub salt in it Dave....they pay a lot less for their tank of diesel :-D
