If you found yourself with 300K (nothing else) on which to build your future, what would you do to make the most of it? Taking risks would be, well, risky, as no more money will come your way other than what this 300K makes for you...

At my time of life, nothing. £300k would see me happily to my grave and beyond.
I googled it and came up with this:
http://www.thisismone...00000-for-income.html

Problem is, I've no idea what it means :-(
I think you need to give us a rough idea how old you are, but I guess from your user name you're just under 40?

In which case would I be correct in thinking you're looking for a business idea rather than investment advice?

Maid, let's just say "middle aged". investment advice, business ideas....anything!
It really depends on your age, in my opinion, and on what other financial arrangements, property, commitments, attitude to risk, etc. you have. If the answer isn't obvious you need proper financial advice.
In my case I'd lnvest it in safe (but good rate) interest accounts and live off the money for 10 years, thus enabling me to defer drawing my private /company pension until I'm nearer 65. I'd put it in a mixture of fixed period accounts- some instant access, some one year, some 2 year.... up to 5 years.
