How bad is your back? Only take a day to recover? Normally you have your allowance for sick days, depends on the job. If it take a while for you to fully recover, you are entitle to injury compensation, you can easily ask a no-win-no-fee injury claim solicitor for info. Or visit your nearest citizen advice bureau.

If you injured your back as a result of doing something at work that is not within your job description then go see the citizens advice bureau but if you hurt yourself as a result of doing your normal job you don't have much of a case, also to be entitled for ssp you must be signed off from your doctor for a period over 3 days as these are classed as waiting days.  Depending on the size of your company speak to your hr department for further advice of to whoever does the payroll as they should be able to advise you of your options.  I very much doubt you did much damage to your back as your doctor only recommended taking the day off so you might be just as well to leave it.
