HD Nearly Full!

We have a 5 year old "HP Notebook PC" laptop. Looking at "My Computer" I see we have two drives.
One is designated as "C:" Size 104 GB but only has 35 GB of free space left.
The other drive is designated as "HP Recovery Disk "D": Size 6.92 GB but with only 736 MB available.
I take it that drive "D:" is a partition on the HD.
Is there a none complicated way of finding the sizes of our files on "C" that would allow me to decide which files/data I could delete?
I had thought of getting the drive reformatted but for some of our applications we don't have the original disks so I assume re installation would be a problem.
Another thought is would it be a benefit if we used an external HD. Or would this just be making the laptop slower and life a bit more complicated.
On the laptop we have Office 2007, meaning that we don't have anything complicated running just bog standard stuff.

I'm not clear why you think you have a problem. Unless you are about to dramatically change the way you use the machine, 35 GB is a reasonably respectable amount of free space, especially after 5 years.

As rojash says, 35Gb is a huge amount of space.

You have only used about a two thirds of your hard drive.

My first laptop only had a 5Gb hard drive!

I think what is in the back of my mind is the machine is running a bit slow, nothing that causes mega problems though.
Now that you have said it, yes I do have quite a bit of space still available.
On the question of slowness, I do have a couple of programs that on start up want to load asking for permission to go online. To get rid of them I click on the "x" to close them. I have gone to "add and remove" but it appears that elements must still be there and not removed. I just don't seem to be able to get at them and I don't want to go into the registry. But the computer wont finish loading until I click on the "X"

The operating sys is Widows Vista.
The virus scanner is Microsoft free. I did have the AVG free version before but when they updated the version I was using it was it never updated so I change to Microsoft which works well. However since I stopped using AVG although I have attempted to remove it each time the computer boots up AVG appears and wants to go online to update which I don't want.
Because I do PowerPoint presentation for charity I do have a lot of photos for my presentations. It is sad (I suppose) but I don't down load films or music.
When I say the machine is slow it is in the booting up which as it appears to load in some order I just feel that maybe if I could get rid of what is left of the AVG that would probable speed it up. I have used Revo Uninstaller But Avg still appears.

Having loads of stuff on your machine won't slow it down.
Running two AV programs will, and may cause other problems as well.
You need to get rid of AVG.

I did what you suggested and I have got rid of of AVG at last. Things look better already.
Is speed of loading affected by the number of items that are in the start up tray, and if so how easy is it to remove some but not delete them?
