Sold My Car Private And The Buyer Is Threatening Legal Action

I recently sold me car. It was in perfect working order with no faults. The buyer even tested the car and signed a 'sold as seen' receipt. The next day he complained to me via email that the car keeps intermittently cutting out. I told him that I have never experienced any such problem with the car, as I never have. He has now told me that he has seeked legal advise and that he wants me to get the fault repaired, as his expert tells him it is highly likely to had been an old/existing fault.
Can you advise where I legally stand with such a situation?

If you have a copy of the 'sold as seen' receipt I don't see that the buyer has a leg to stand on.

The buyer is trying it on, just tell him he has signed for it and it is his problem, legally he can do nothing .

As long as the buyer can't prove that you are a "motor trader" he hasn't a leg to stand on.
If you have sold a few cars in the past year, and regularly advertise cars for sale you may have a problem.

If this is a single private sale he doesn't have any redress. You receipt is a bonus, but don't worry anymore or be bullied by him. Refuse his calls now and if he persists tell him you'll call the police.

He should have had it checked over by a mechanic before he bought it. I assume it had a valid MOT. He is bluffing. I suggest you ignore him

he probably has a mate in a garage who will fake receipts for labour and parts for this 'fault'

as others have said, he should have had it checked before, not after


if he hasnt got a mate, he may even be trying to get you to buy a replacement part for anoteher vehicle ... hes put the dodgy part in your car, and put the good one in another identical car... presumably an expensive part ... who knows

It could also be that it is a 'new car' to him and he is not driving it properly, we tend to get very used to how our own car drives and it could well be that your style of driving has not highlighted this problem but he is driving it differently and it is cutting out because he is not driving it the way you got used to driving it, sounds daft but it is a truism
