Sqad Advice Please

Evening Sqad. I had quite a bad fall three weeks ago. The damage was to my foot and front of my leg to the knee. I had an x-ray on it last week which was clear for breaks. There is a large lump where my shin meets my foot which is, I believe, a hematoma and my foot and ankle were very swollen.
I was told to rest for two days and gradually begin walking on it and that it could take up to seven months to heal completely.
I have rested it, the swelling reduced completely so I have been walking more or less as normal. Today the foot is much more swollen again and sore and the shin, where the lump is and above is burning when I walk but not hot to touch.
Could a small break have been missed in the x-ray and is recurring swelling normal?

Well, it depends upon who looked at the X-Ray.......if a junior Dr commented, then yes a fracture could have been missed.However if it was reported on by a Consultant Radiologist then it is much less likely that a fracture has been overlooked.

No, recurring swelling is not normal and I would return to A&E or your doctor as the haematoma doesn't seem to be healing and might, although unlikely, indicate infection.

Thank you Sqad. The x-ray was looked at by a consultant because the symptoms were "unusual". I was told to be aware of infection and return if the area was hot to touch. It's not hot.
I have an MRI scan on Thursday...remember the long drawn out confusing artery thing?
Can I wait and ask about this then or should I do something before?

gness....yes that is a good idea to wait, but if it gets more painful or you don't feel well in yourself, then don't wait.

Thanks Sqad. I will wait unless it or I get worse. The MRI results are being sent to a bone consultant.......the artery man said if high heels help then it must be my bones.
You and I know it's not but....oh well....I have such a low boredom threshold a different consultant won't hurt.....and seriously I do know of this chap and he's good.

Hi gness - I was offline and missed the account of your peripheral vascular disease that isn't. Bit baffled by it all.
Sorry you have had an accident - is the appointment on Thursday just to go to Radiology for a MRI? If so it is likely you will just be seen by a radiographer who will not be able to examine you, or have the authority to ask for further tests; in which case it might be better to go back to A&E.
Is the MRI of your abdomen or hip, do you know?

And Daisy...thanks. Just want to garden and wall climb and bird watch. Such a miserable spring...don't want to spend summer.....hopping or with one leg in the air........well not without a good reason. ;-)

Hi Slaney...I don't know what went pear-shaped with such a simple problem. The ultrasound showed "something" in my abdomen which would be investigated by an MRI scan. The leg arteries showed...normal for my age..62.
I was then given an appointment with the consultant to discuss the MRI...before I had it! I kept the appointment. He said all was well...the "something" in the abdomen was "probably" just thickening and if the high heels helped that was good but if I was still concerned perhaps I should see a bone man.
I then did what is out of character for me.......had a little hissy fit and tried to cry....I also blocked his exit. He has organised an appointment with the bone specialist and an MRI scan on my tummy and legs...though I won't be surprised if they scan my head on Thursday. x

p.s. Slaney....if I can't get the leg looked at on Thursday I will park in A&E again...

Who does the result of the MRI go to, and more to the point who is going to give you the result?
