Mark Thatcher is a 2nd Baronet by inheritence, not because of anything he good he has done. He is a convicted criminal having received a 4 year suspended sentence in South Africa for his part in an attempted coup in Equiatorial Guinea, has been involved in a list of shady financial dealings as long as your arm. Is an undesirable in Switzerland, Monaco and the USA. So is he a fit and proper person to have a title? Yes we all know about the Archers and Ahmeds who have kept theirs, but isnt it time this out of date/ touch law was changed?

Only if you go through the whole list and not just those you don't like.
Undesirable in Switzerland?

That's not good.
lol jj. Come to think of it everyone I saw in monaco seemed undesirable.
And orange chocolate.

That's undesirable in Switzerland.
Blimey, that's a bit harsh,
I mean, we've all made the odd mistake or three along the way,
Give the guy a chance!
is there a peerage in Britain that was honestly earned?
Mark Thatcher has made more than 2 or 3 mistakes. He was caught smuggling illegal arms and recruiting mercenaries for a rebel army. He was lucky not to get a death sentence or life in prison. He was only freed due to his Mums influence.
Carol Thatcher has been quoted as saying '' he has never done an honest days work in his life''

Sounds perfect for a peerage then!
I have far more important things to worry about.
He would make a fantastic MP.lol
horrible toe rag of a person always hiding behind mummy's skirt tails, I don't think Dennis would have been very proud of him, whats he going to do the next time he gets in trouble ? appeal to the House of Lords ?
How can you strip him of his title? He inherited it, he wasn't awarded it.
shame Carol couldn't have inherited it; she's not exactly PC but she does seem a jolly sort. But of course the boy is favoured by the law as he was by his mother.
I think Chill doubt raised this over Lord Ahmed

I don't think it's common - perhaps it should be more so

I raised the point in that thread that perhaps a better way to approach it, rather than 'Should x y or z be stripped of their honours' what the criteria should be.

Perhaps convisction of an imprisonable offence? but then what if the offence was committed abroard? say oh I don't know gun running?

I do think this propably should be looked at because the difficulty of recinding titles does bring the system into (more) disrepute

If we are going to hand out baubles we should take them away again if the recipient is no longer worthy of them.

Can't see reform of this happening under a Tory Government though - too many vested interests
Mark Thatcher briefed the Foreign Office before he started procuring helicopters and arms to over though Equitorial Guinea. Don't remember the FO revoking his passport and telling him not to do it.
His mother taught him well!

Titles should be 'earned' on merit and not inherited. the title should die with the recipient. In fact the whole honours system needs overhauled, its not fit for the modern age. Its all about cronieism and 5 Easy-Steps-to-Promotion.There are very few peers who through their various indiscretions are fir and proper, and the amazing thing is they preside over the law making in this country, how more perverse is that!!!
