Power Of Attorney.

My friends son is going to work in Vietnam for 12 months, he has a house which is currently for sale and would like his mother to sign any contracts etc on his behalf. What does my friend need just to have temporary powers.

You could do it yourself, but it might not be accepted in some quarters, e.g. banks. Best to see a solicitor. They may well have the appropriate form to fill out.

if you're gonna use a solicitor... then why not
go to a solicitor that you have chosen to convey the house
( I realise from the text the house is for sale but there is at present no offer)
and say to the fella - what do you need for the mother to contract on the son's behalf ? I would have thought - but I am not legal - that a letter of intent might do. (much cheaper)
