My FIL died suddenly on 28th December. He was found by his carer who then called 999. We were notified by the police and were in a state of shock as he had spent Christmas with us and had a great time. When we began to make arrangements for his funeral I realised that we hadn't had any personal effects returned to us. We asked the undertaker if he had his watch, 2 signet rings and his wallet but he said that nothing like that had been given to him. I know he was wearing them the day before he died and we had also given him £100 which he put in his wallet. We on earth can I start to find out what happened to his things?

Have you been to his property and taken a look?
i'm sorry for you loss .
was he taken to a hospital ,if not i would get in contact with the police .
Ask the person who discovered the body.
So sorry to hear of your loss and now all this on top, what a worry. I have no idea but hopefully you will find these items. Have you asked his carer if he was wearing them when he was found?
I would check his house first
Really sorry for your loss. I hope you manage to sort it out. x

Thank you for your replies. The first thing we did was search his flat as we knew where he hid things. I have contacted the hospital and I am waiting for a reply. As for the carer, we do not have her phone number just the company that provided the carer. That will be my next line of enquiry if I don't get anywhere with the hospital. I'm hoping it's not her as she had been looking after him for a few years.
She may just be holding onto them for safe keeping, fingers crossed.
Just a thought had an undertaker been because they removed my mothers jewellery and put it in a bag for the family.

Haven't heard anything from the carer and the undertaker was given permission by us to collect my FIL from the hospital mortuary.
The Police sometimes remove valuables for safekeeping under circumstances like this so I would check with them to see if that was the case.
Otherwise I would file a crime report and let the Police enquire of the carer and undertaker.
FiL's stuff could still be at the hospital. If it was a 999 call you are usually taken to an assessment ward before being moved to the appropriate ward so the things could be anywhere in the hospital. That would be my first port of call.
Sorry for your sudden loss. But, as Maizie says. I was taken to hospital by ambulance from work. A friend was called to the hospital but couldn't stay until emergency op was carried out, but was told that I would be on X ward following surgery. When he arrived the next day I was on Z ward. When I came around, I had asked for my watch, etc. and they couldn't find my belongings, until he arrived and told them about the change. They then checked X ward, and they were produced immediately. I'm sure they will turn up.

My FIL was never on a ward, he was taken straight to the mortuary. The hospital have said that they log everything that a body comes in with. They checked their records and said that there was nothing on him. That only leaves the carer but proving it and getting his things back could be tricky.
Did the Police attend?
Have you checked with them?
I think it is time to call in the Police. I feel so sorry for you dealing with the loss of your father in law and now this but it seems you have exhausted all other avenue's. I hope you are able to find these belongings.
