Does anyone have any personal experience of changing your name via deed poll. How much does it cost, do you need to buy extra copies of letters, certificates etc.

You are better off changing your name by "Stautory Declaration" It is by far cheaper, especially if you take your own.  I was charged 3 in 1988, my friend did it last year and the solicitor did not even charge him anything.

You can probably find a name change stautory declaration on the net to print out and fill in yourself.

It takes as long as to raise your arm and say "I swear that all in this in this statement is true"

Then get official stamped copies to send off to passport/DVLA/Bank etc

Above is a sample of a stat dec, it is similar to mine but not as good

A solicitor will charge you a fee (usually betwen 20 and 50) for drafting your statutory declaration. However, you can type your own statutory declaration, and then pay a much smaller fee to have it sworn (or "notarised").

Remember to start it off in your current name but sign it in your new name.

why do peeps change their names?
ermmm, marriage is one, some people want to distance themselves from their family for personal reasons, or like me you had a totally embarrassing surname, or you could do what someone i know did who is a star trek nerd and change your name to James T Kirk or some other hero

Thats right Londondave. I  want to rid myself of soon to be ex husband's name and family for good. The only good thing he ever gave me were my children. They also want rid of any link with him as he was the cruelest and most evil person that they or i ever had the misfortune to meet. But we won't have to see him now cos we had him banged up in prison, but unfortunately, not for long enough.
if you go back to your birth name, i don't think you need a statutory declaration, you can just do it andinform the relevant people that need to know, ie bank, dvla,dr etc, good luck
