Has anyone has experience of becoming a DHSS appointee for a family member who has become incapacitated? What is involved and how long does it take?

Thank you both for your replies. I had checked out the DWP link,ff,and i have spoken to the ESA people so the process is in motion. Minty, thank you, most helpfull. The only problem might be that our son is in a neurological rehabilitation unit near Salsbury (50 miles away) but I expect we can cross that bridge when we come to it.
