Here is Sandra, fanciable aint she - that is, to probably another orang utan. Would you ever have considered giving her basic human rights? No I wouldn't but because the poor old gal has been cooped up for most of her life her LAWYER has managed to pull it off by taking her case to court. How her LAWYER will be paid........we'd best not go there.

All species, or groups of species, ought to have a set of rights acknowledged. Even if for some the number of rights is near negligible, perhaps limited to no gratuitous cruelty/suffering.

they didn't treat the humans very nicely when they ran the planet.
No animal should spend it's life in a cage. It's a pity NY doesn't follow BA's lead and force release of these poor creatures into an animal sanctuary such as Monkey World in Dorset.
Yes. Yes I would.
We are a disgustingly cruel species and the more this kind of thing happens the happier and less horrified that I am human I become.
If the human race would stop destroying the natural habitats of these majestic apes for their own greed then she wouldn't need to be in a zoo for conservation purposes in the first place.
Totally agree Frognog. Breaks my heart. I'm just watching Monkey World at the moment and it's wonderful to see the rehabilitated chimps rescued from disgusting lives from all over the world..

I agree that animals should not be caged or being made to perform in a circus, but surely there are animal rights to protect them. Basic human rights are for humans the ones who speak and act as a human being, use a loo and walk. Sandra would probably empty Superdrug of depilatory cream given the chance.

The only time I applaud the animal welfare groups is for the reintroduction of wildlife species that are becoming rare.
I can't get my head around this, I do love animals but to tarnish this poor creature with 'Human rights' is inhuman itself. They have laws to themselves and as for the Orangutan well... FREEDOM!
askyourgran you are missing the point.
Just because this animal doesn't speak your language, are you prepared to subject it to a life of misery?
This fellow mammal is just as clever as you or me, only in a different way.
It doesn't say which "basic human rights" it means. Just that it shouldn't be kept in solitary confinement. Shouldn't that already be covered by animal rights?
it might be as clever as you, frognog.
Easily Svejk. Is it as clever as you?
Many countries don't have the legislation in place that precludes people acquiring these wild animals and keeping them in a cage they can barely stand up in, for life. Or using them as tourist magnates, beach monkeys, pulling all their teeth out so that they can't bite a customer. It's horrendous.
expect ;o)
That is true, ladybirder. I'm not too up on Argentinian animal rights. Maybe they should start with those, though. It shouldn't be necessary to be human to be treated with respect.

Exactly Pixie.

Which point has been missed Frognog? Maybe to some level of education I wouldn't know, but even then I doubt Sandra would have stood a 38 hour week dealing with people, answering the phone, running a home and a family, basically as a human being would. I can't swing in trees, sleep in a tree or find food, nor would I want to, and that is about all Sandra's natural life amounts to. As it is she has been treated cruelly and should be set free, but she is not used to freedom now, she won't recall doing urang utan things. This is where she should be given recognition from the groups that it serves, Animal welfare groups, not Human rights, because they never will be.

Gran she won't just be set free. She will go into a sanctuary where she will be integrated with others of her kind. At Monkey World she would be put on her own at first, next to other Orangs so she gets used to the smells and sounds, and then a friendly female would join her and teach her Orang etiquette, before she is gradually introduced to others. It's wonderful to see and in many cases the released creature will have an innate sense of what is required to survive, i.e. be subservient to the alpha male. I hope she ends up in such a place as MW.

DB, I fear you are right. A few people are now starting to sit up and take notice but it is probably too late. And some idiots are still killing them for sport or for their body parts. Climate change isn't helping the Polar Bears either. Heartbreaking.
saying an oran utan shouldn't be kept in a zoo is hardly madness. But you actually seem more concerned about the lawyer anyway.
And I would think the LAWYER will be paid by the Animal Rights group who brought the case to court although I don't see why that matters.
