potiche I think I would be a jigsaw with a very fine blade. Tap along the edge that you are cutting and mare sure that the full edge to be cut is well supported. Good luck it is a horrid job. If the cut edge is exposed after fitting t with a trim.
Be using a jigsaw
tape along
Make sure.

No experience but I assume you used a saw and it splintered ?

I'd suggest something without the rough vibrating action saw teeth give (unless you have a fast fine electric one maybe).

Can you score it with a Stanley knife ? Or even use it to cut through ? Gradually scoring through can be softer on the cut material.

How thin is the panel ? Maybe tin snips or perhaps large scissors may be a possibility if thin enough.
Also cut away from where you want the cut and sand / file down ?
After fitting finish it. lol b*****y keyboard.
As Togo almost said, :-P, a jigsaw with a hacksaw blade fitted. Clamp a straight edge top and bottom where the cut's to be made to stop the sheet dancing about and, once you start, keep going to the end. When the blade slows down it catches the material and that's when cracking and splintering happen.
Confidence is key, go for it.

I got your drift Togo! Thnx all..... seems the worst thing was to try a bit by hand. It's gone fine.... clamped board underneath & gone for it ....... cobble over & job done.
