After an animal was seized by an appropriate charity from an unsuitable owner (I am a volunteer with the charity), a young man (the boyfriend of the original owner) came to my door quite late one evening and demanded that I hand over the animal to him.
I told him that the animal was not on the premises and I would not hand it over to him even if it was. After about an hour of unpleasant argument he went away.
I have since learned that he recorded the entire conversation that took place on my doorstep.
I had no idea the conversation was being recorded, but apparently the smartphone in his top pocket was switched to record.
I am not the slightest bit concerned about this because I know that I did not say anything that he could use against me in any way.
But I wondered if it is legal for him to have done this?

Yes.
Look at how many people have CCTV.
CCTV footage is not the same as audio footage, tut, tut, tut, i would have thought as an SIA licensed security you would have know that^

@op "Under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA), it is not illegal for individuals to tape conversations provided the recording is for their own use. ... If a person intends to make the conversation available, they must get the consent of the person being recorded."
So it depends on what its used for and from what you say the nice gentleman who cutely recorded you on the sly did not record it so he could lul himself to sleep with the drone of his own voice but is probably going to try and use it against you so relax because when he does it will be ripped up by the defence but probably won't even be sniffed at by the jolly cps.

Many thanks.
I'm puzzled, Thirdamigo- (although I'm now wondering if my thoughts have been confirmed) - your answer suggests you think ummmm is SIA licenced
I'm not licensed for anything.

I work for a security firm...in the office!
Oh, a thousand apologies madam.
Thirdamigo seems to know a lot about you in his short time here, ummmm
Is the OP all he appears to be I wonder!!
Oh he's just klowning around FF.

OP - perfectly legal.
"Thirdamigo seems to know a lot about you in his short time here, ummmm"

She said she was security on ONE thread , i assumed she was badged, she said she wasn't so i got it wrong .and that equates to me knowing a lot about her? I would LOL,but frankly this over the top mass paranoia has got me slightly alarmed

Well I've never said I was badged. Although I do have to sit in and monitor really boring tests for the real security men...so I could get my security license if I wanted to.

But as a fairly small female I'd get the crap jobs. Like operating a drone :-) whereas the big boys get to go to boxing matches and motor racing and such like...
Don't worry....recording the conversation was an implied " threat" to make you do what he wanted. The same applies to videos taken on the phone....he's just a stupid bully
