Because though the video was posted in all innocense, it could be taken the wrong way. So the tweet was a clarification affirming his real views.
And he didn’t apologise to the ‘PC Brigade’ (whatever that is), he apologised to everyone.

The real problem is with the description "Princess dress" (or perhaps with the word "Princess" itself). It should be "Royal Dress", obviously.

I guess he figured out that it was one thing to have a genuinely held opinion about a lad effectively cross-dressing and perhaps forming a desire that may affect his life later; quite another to put the issue on the Net as a lifetime embarrassment to the child. Lots of kids play dress up. They may be devastated to see the mockery when old enough to understand.

Except he wasn’t. He was playfully teasing the boy. The child knew that, and was very happy, not belittled.

I wouldn't be happy with his comments being said in private, but to then publish them on the WWW is shocking behaviour and definitely worthy of an apology.

True Groms, the child didn't look too bothered, still I really hope there was an adult within earshot who laughingly (but meant it!) pointed out that it was perfectly ok for him to wear the dress :-)

Hamilton knew it was OK to wear a dress, no one needed to tell him. He was joking with the child not chastising him. Hamilton tweeted a clarification precisely because people were taking his words literally, when in fact they were said in fun.

Furthermore as someone with highly questionable dress sense himself, he should understand that people in glass houses...etc.
