Can I get legal aid to sue social services for slander

How did they slander you? Do you have any witnesses who can contradict what SS have said? You could go down the route of an official complaint against the very person or persons who slandered you and take it from there. There may be a journalist or two out there who may be interested in your story. But as far as getting legal aid to fight a civil matter - absolutely no...

Further to PP's posts, the law has been clarified since the Defamation Act 2013 took effect in 2014. It now clearly states "A statement is not defamatory unless its publication has caused or is likely to cause serious harm to the reputation of the claimant".
So you can like as much as you like about someone, even shouting your lies from rooftops and getting them broadcast on TV and radio, as long as you don't cause serious harm to their reputation. Simply annoying them, upsetting them, embarrassing them or making them look foolish isn't enough to risk being successfully sued for defamation.

Ckat - there's very little point in discussing this with me in more depth. I am certainly no expert in the law and as a parent have never had any dealings with SS. I am not au fait with the extent of their powers, or their procedures, ethics or usual working practice.
Your best bet would be to go to go down the complaint route, seeks help from Citizen's Advice or contact the Solicitors I mentioned last night.
I wish you the best of luck and I hope you stand up to any bullying and get the result you are looking for.

// The late George Carman QC, famous for getting Jeremy Thorpe acquitted, was a very successful libel lawyer. He didn't come cheap!//
was an interesting person - criminal QC in the 'Pule where he got doddy off his tax charge ( still £2m to pay in back tax)
and was 'noticed' and went down to London for civil Jury trials which are really only libel
wouild specialise in 'new evidence' on the xth day of the trial ( x greater than 5) - which swung the case
now dead - he was a compulsive gambler and need the court fees to pay his debts and this means that he took things to trial which should have been settled out of court beforehand
when he told his divorced wife he was dying from cancer
she replied - you took everything
I think we are clear slander is a non starter
tty to get the notes corrected if they have factual inaccuracies
if the are peoples opinions, it is virtually impossible as they wil lsay well that is what I thought at the time
