Travel To And From Work
We work for a large international company as mobile reactive engineers, there is a bit of a spat going at the moment as we are being told that we are expected to travel 1 hour to and from work in our own time. Is this correct, I was under the impression that it was half an hour each way so 1 hour in total per day.

A large international company would have a clear policy on what travelling time can be claimed, surely you have all looked into that? Mine for example (which TUPEd over from civil service regs) would expect you to deduct your normal home to duty time off the journey when you are travelling to another destination before you claimed the rest.
You really need to start with the terms and conditions of your contract of employment to find out what the rules are regarding travel/work time and allowances/payments in lieu etc. Your company should have people in an HR department who can provide answers to questions. Do you belong to a trade union or staff association or is there a body that negotiates with the company over pay and conditions ? If so then you can approach them to help you find out more information.
I must be thick as I'm now confused about what exactly you are asking "I just think its a bit of a cheek expecting us to basically be working over 10 hours per day and they only pay 8. A normal day is around 10 hours anyway".
So you normally work for 10 hours and get paid for 8 irrelevant of travel??

Yeah you must be thick as if you read what I was asking you would see I was asking if there is a law regarding this and that it has only just come up. Most of the guys I work with do the same as me approx. 10 hours per day and we don't expect any extra for this, but what if next month its an hour and a half each way etc etc

I think the issue here is that the office is 10 minutes from home, but as mobile reactive engineers, your job could be almost anywhere and you are being expected to arrive at todays job, on site where ever that might be, in your own time?
I say the day starts at the office/depot and you travel to site in work time, but as others have said, it all depends on the contract or employment or the travel to work policy.
