Should have been posted under law about probate sorry.
Sorry but I'm not answering any more of your questions because you never get back to those people who have taken the time to give you good advice -and not only me.
you go to the appointment.
You collect it and if you are the executor you start administering the estate. Most organisations will need a copy of the probate certificate before they release funds, close accounts etc. You'll need to give a copy to whoever is selling the house too.
It's called a Grant of Representation and you need it to show to a variety of organisations in order to sort out your dad's estate. Just go to the meeting and it will be explained to you.

Thank you for all your kind replies. Much appreciated. Special mention to Auntpollygrey who is always helpful and gives good advice.
Always nice to be mentioned in dispatches
b;imey = pretty Poll has a bit of a lob on innit?
very sorry for your loss and it will take almost a year to get over the deah of loved one

turn up to the meeting and the laywer will say - you dont say if you know what is in the will or if the deceased died without a will

former he will tell you who who gets what from the will -
and the latter he will tell you what the law says about inheritance with no will.

and whilst you are at it make sure that you have a will yourself

anything like my family this process is a bit of dog fight
with everyone being as unreasonable as could be
