Hi all
Has someone had this problem, this week I was contacted by HMRC, saying that I had to pay back my tax rebate for the year ending 5th April. My tax form was done by someone else on my behalf, and they are asking for nearly £5000, by January.....is there anything I can do?

you sure this isn't some sort of scam, apparently they are going aroun at the moment.
have they written to you or was it a call? have they set out why they think it's wrong, and do you agree? If it is genuine, when does the person who did your tax return say?

Yes I received a letter, and checked my Gateway account, so not a scam....

Also the person who did my tax return was a friend of a friend, and I no longer have his contract details.
Have they provided a calculation as to how they have arrived at the amount to be repaid? If not, try asking.
I would speak to them. If it is genuinely owed, they may let you pay in installments. They would rather get it back slower, than not at all.

Thanks all!
yes I have - I had £24 000
and you basically need an accountant ( wh I had anyway)

you should appeal and then keep up the pressure
I have had mine abolished and reinstated by some tidy clerk
three times I think

this is NOT something really you can do by yourself

Times full of it today - we are two of thousands
I had a txt telling me I was owed nearly £400..ring this number ,,,,, no thank you I'm a non tax payer..
