The first time I became aware of the knife trend was in Halifax in a  Yr. 9's satchel that a boy had left behind (I was on Supply).  I opened it to discover the owner,  having ensured a cleaner could act as a witness, and discovered a sharpened screwdriver. This was in about 1988.  Pakistani area and boy.

It's gone downhill since then.  Reported, of course - don't think anything really resulted, but I was in another school the next week.
