Answer is THIRD so "behind two others" is the definition, but I can't parse. Can anyone help?

I think it's because the Yorkshire Ridings were known as "thirds" - not 'S(outh)'

I think it's because the Yorkshire Ridings were known as "thirds" - not 'S(outh)'

a Riding is (historical) Any of the three administrative divisions of Yorkshire and some other northern counties of England.

Calibax has explained better than me, sorry.

Thank you both. I knew there were 3 Ridings in Yorks but didn't know they were called thirds.

To me thirds would mean equal sizes, whereas Ridings are three parts.
