Bank error, not in my favour!!

My bank, the halifax, have today(10/3/06), called me to say that they duplicated a payment i made via cheque drop in, last April '05 and also even got the amount wrong!! They have only just worked out why the mistake was made but admit it was their mistake. Is there a time limit on having to pay back any monies and any interest to banks as a result of bank error?

Presumably they gave you the money twice, in which case I'd assume they are entitled to ask for any overpayment back (although I don't think they can claim any interest the amount generated while sitting in your account).

Did you really not notice it yourself at the time? It's a little hard to believe.

The time limit will be the same as any other debt - 6 years I think though I can never remember the exact figure.
