Fattest Dogs

In the programme last night on channel 4, the owner of the rottweiler bo said she saw no harm in spoiling her, she got what she wanted and would have a happy life. Did anyone disagree, I myself think maybe she loves getting a treat but there is nothing more satisfying for me than seeing a dog run about the park enjoying itself, something surely this fat dog cannt do. I was so happy to see the little king charles wallis running and chasing the cats at the end. Bo's owners attitude appalled me.

Most dogs have no cut off point when it comes to eating, this is the survival mechanism. Letting the dog get this fat is a form of cruelty. This is the same dozy cow who said "he's the same weight as me and I'm all right", some people are just to dim to keep animals. I'm surprised the RSPCA are not involved.

I agree,carrying that much weight around has got to be bad for it,we were told by our vet that its best to keep a dog slightly under weight,as apposed to overweight and our dog is doing great on it!

The best comment I heard during Crufts was that a dog is basically a stomach with a life support system attached.

If allowed to, dogs will eat until they are physically sick and then go back for more. Hence the reason it is up to the owner to regulate food intake for them. I would love to spoil my dogs rotten with titbits, but I choose not to, as part of my responsiblity to them is to their health.

One of the main problems is when owners start feeding "human" food to their dogs. To some smaller breeds, one human biscuit equates to us eating the whole packet- not a great idea on a regular basis and you can start to understand why the dogs pile on the pounds.

Personally, I apportion absolutely no blame to the dog and 100% blame to the owners.

I didn't watch the programme, but I am well aware of some pet owners' habbit of 'humanising' their dogs. The "He understands every word I say ..." brigade.

The point is, as has been advised, dogs are animals, and they will beg for food as long as it is around, and then forget about it when the scent has gone. To anthropomorphisise an animal to make it fit some need for a surrogate baby is cruel to the dog - as evidenced by the posts here.

Dogs are pack animals, and respond best to knowing their place in the pack, and being made to keep to it. Proper food and regular exercise make for a happy and healthy dog - and owner.

I've got a labrador and the vet once told me that 'they live to eat'. yes he is spoilt and yes does occasionally have treats that maybe he shouldn't. However at the end of the day if he was allowed to get overweight to the degree that the rottweiler got, it would be cruel and totally irresponsible of me.

I also did'nt see that programme, but did see an article about it and personally feel that the poor dog (although harsh) should be taken away from this person as she is making it suffer and ultimately killing the poor thing.

If the owner was starving the dog would be taken away & the owners could be prosecuted. Overfeeding could be considered just as cruel

The owner said, "We can't have children. Beau is my daughter". I guess if she had had children, they would have been on another television report - about the number of obese children there are these days. How could she argue that the dog wasn't too fat, when she must have known she was on a programme all about pets that are too fat!!!

I didn't see the programme, but I have just seen the article in the sun and personally I think the owners should be prosecuted. It is not just a bit overweight, it is obese. It is cruel not love.

I though my cat Kiwi was fat, but judging by what was on the programme he is positively svelt!

This is a form of animal cruelty so she should have her dog taken away from her and she should be banned from keeping pets for some time.

Can i just say the grooming salon, if you can call it that, was disgusting! Who'd take their dog there? Even if the dog is fat, she shouldnt' have talked to a customer like that! We wouldn't dream of it at our salon! And the owner also talked about feeling safe in the house with the dog, whats it gonna do, eat the burglars?!!
