hotel cancellation charged to credit card

can hotels charge a credit card if the guest doesn't arrive at the hotel and fails to cancel the reservation? the cancelation policy clearly states that they need to cancel the day prior to arrival?

of course they can if its part of the booking conditions
I once managed to argue that they should remove the breakfast portion of the cost, as they wouldn't have to make me one, and saved �15 against a bill that I would had to pay, becuase I wasn't able to make it. If you don't ask......
Yes of course!
Yep - they certainly can! That's why they take your credit card details at the time of booking, so they can still charge you if you don't turn up/cancel in time. :o)
