Disposal of dog poo

This is a serious (if distasteful) question... sorry for unintentionally turning stomachs! We have two medium sized dogs and they produce quite a lot of poo, most of which ends up on our back lawn. I clear it up very regularly, but have yet to find a hygienic and easy way to dispose of it. I have a dog waste disposal unit (powered by Bio Activator), but it just can't hack the pace (if you know what I mean). Could other dog owners please share their tricks for dog poo disposal.

you could flick it over the fence (JOKE!) my Dad always used to gather it in spades and lob it down the loo (eeeuughg). Do you walk the dogs regularly? If they could get into the habit of pooping in a public place you would only have the unpleasant duty of bagging it and putting it into the numerous poo bins in these areas.

I buy the poo bags which are supposed to be impregnated to kill the pong, then put them in my dustbin.

Depends where my dog has performed. If it's in what golfers would call the rough, I leave it to biodegrade as a natural product, but if it's where people walk or children play I bag it up.

Very noble.. also to the point.. how do we get rid of babypoo without putting that in the dustbin? - sure you get rid of the big lumps but an accumulation of millions of soiled pampers into landfill.. Oy No.! {sorry to threadjack..]

xyzzyplugh - absolutely, which is why I use washable nappies whenever possible. It's hassle, but a small price to pay for ease of conscience (and stomach!)

Recently the cats had to use a litter tray for 10 weeks. I used non-clumping litter, and sifted it for poop, which went down the loo. Revolting job (but see note above re baby poop in toilet....)

I have a garden composter and have recently started putting my dog's poo in there. Nice.... However, when on walks I always 'bag 'n bin' it to prevent anti-dog folk from having a go !

Oh no, mistralmel, PLEASE don't put dog poop in the compost bin! It's a health hazard due to all the nasty bugs it contains, which aren't destroyed by composting, and in any case unless your dog is guaranteed 100% vegetarian, it contains animal matter which also shouldn't be composted. What's wrong with picking it up and flushing it down the loo? I don't have pets now but that's what I do with the poo that ends up in my garden from other people's pets. As for using the bin: I vaguely remember hearing that it is illegal to put any poo in a dustbin. Also, Ewood27: the "rough" is exactly where my kids usually end up playing. When your dog poos you should clear it up wherever it is.

Yes, DavidUK - one of the arguments for using washable nappies is that it is supposed to be illegal to put faeces in dustbins. However, I can't find any references for that - does anyone else know?
It could be possible that it only applies to humans - a quick Google search has thrown up numerous local government sites actually recommending disposal of cat and dog mess in dustbins.

PS to the above - forgot to say they recommend that it is securely bagged first, preferably double-bagged, before putting it in dustbin or littler bin.
